5 Common BJJ White Belt Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is like learning a new language. In the beginning, your "accent" will be thick, and you’ll likely make a few stumbles. That is perfectly normal! Every Black Belt in the Winder area started exactly where you are today.
At Anthem Martial Arts, we want to make your transition into the "gentle art" as smooth as possible. To help you level up faster, we’ve rounded up the five most common mistakes beginners make on the mats—and how you can avoid them.
1. Using Strength Over Technique
This is the #1 mistake for BJJ and Tang Soo Do for beginners. When you don’t know the move yet, your instinct is to use muscle to power through.
The Problem: You’ll tire yourself out in three minutes and leave yourself open to easy sweeps.
The Fix: Focus on breathing. If you find yourself holding your breath and tensing every muscle, pause. Relax, and try to remember the specific leverage point your instructor showed you.
2. Neglecting the Fundamentals
It’s tempting to watch "fancy" moves on YouTube and try to pull them off in class. However, BJJ is built on a foundation of basic movements like the bridge, the shrimp, and the technical stand-up.
The Fix: Fall in love with the basics. At Anthem Martial Arts, we emphasize that a "boring" move done perfectly is more effective than a flashy move done poorly.
3. "Spazzing" on the Mats
In the BJJ world, a "spazzy white belt" is someone who moves erratically and dangerously because they are panicking.
The Problem: This is how injuries happen—to you and your training partners.
The Fix: Slow down. It is better to get caught in a submission while moving slowly and technically than to "win" a round by flailing. Remember: we are a "pack" in Winder, and we take care of our teammates.
4. Comparing Your Journey to Others
You might see someone who started at the same time as you getting promoted faster or winning more rounds.
The Problem: Everyone’s body, athletic background, and learning style are different. Comparison is the thief of joy (and progress).
The Fix: Focus on being 1% better than you were yesterday. Your only competition is the version of you that stayed on the couch.
5. Being Afraid to "Tap Out"
Some beginners feel like tapping out (signaling the end of a match) is a sign of weakness.
The Problem: Refusing to tap leads to avoidable injuries and stops you from learning why you got caught in the first place.
The Fix: Tap early and tap often. Tapping is a reset button that allows you to start over and try again. It’s how we stay safe and keep training for years to come.
